If you are arriving in the picturesque Bad Schandau and looking for a relaxing weekend, the elegant hotel Elbresidenz stands for a great choice. This 5-star hotel offers comfortable rooms, a rich breakfast and its own comfortable spa with sun terrace, overlooking the river Elbe. In addition, the key card from your room at Elbresidenz equals entrance card to Toskana Therme, a renowned spa situated a stone’s throw from the hotel.
I have spent one night at hotel Elbresidenz one night while discovering the beauties of Saxon Switzerland (an article about what to visit in Saxon Switzerland is here) and I find it worth recommending. In fact, it was my favorite one of several different a places I stayed at on my trip. On Booking.com the hotel just has a rating of 8.6, but for me, it gained a rating of 91%. It’s almost impossible to beat it – stay at this hotel is an absolute bliss.
The hotel is situated at heart of a spa town Bad Schandau in the south of Saxony, Germany. Bad Schandau is about 6 kilometers from the Czech frontier and 33 km southeast of Dresden. Bad Schandau is a great base for exploring the Saxon Switzerland National park and also Bohemian Switzerland.
The spa tradition of Bad Schandau goes back to 1730 when the healthy springs were first discovered in the nearby valley. Instead of drinking, its healthy effects where utilized for bathing.

With plenty of hotels and pensions around, Elbrezidenz makes for one of the best five-star hotels in Bad Schandau. Although it looks rather discreet at first glance, it is a relatively large hotel with 207 rooms connected by a labyrinth of corridors. The impressive building is best admired from the riverside promenade, where specials gardens are waiting for hotel guests to relax.
I have spent there just one night which is a pity: I wish I could have more time to enjoy more time in the spa and exploring the town. Well, at least I have a good reason to come back another time.
I stayed in a comfortable and spacious room, featuring the conference table and large bathroom. The great thing about Elbrezidnz is that even if you get the smallest room (single room Superior in this case) there is 18 square meters just for you to enjoy. The double rooms are even much bigger, around 6-30 square meters. Either way, there is no way you would get claustrophobic here. If you travel with children, there are even family rooms, too.
The Elbresidenz is situated just 100 meters from the river Elbe so I totally recommend you to get a room in this direction; the view of the riverside promenade is really beautiful. My room was directed to the main square, but it was enough for one night as well.
There is a fresh fruit prepared for hotel guests each day in the room. If you have newly arrived, there is a box of pralines on your table, too. I love chocolate so this hotel really got me on that one:0
Facilities and service
Hotel Elbresidenz is by far not the cheapest choice but the truth is, you get what you pay for. Both the rooms and service are fabulous. The only thing that didn’t work so smoothly was the internet connection: within half an hour, I still wasn’t able to connect and at the end of the day I still needed up using my data package. I can imagine most people are not going to use precious time at wellness to work on the laptop, but the few of us that do are getting panic attacks without a properly working wifi in a hotel. I would certainly consider it as a room for improvement.
Guests of Elbrezidenz are being truly spoiled by amazing service. This is a five-star hotel and the five-star feeling starts right from entering the hallway: the staff is very friendly and helpful. The reception staff is both from the Czech Republic and Germany, so and it was cool to be able to talk there in my native language.
The breakfast buffet is very rich and pretty much anyone can choose food of their preference. The hotel was quite busy at the time I stayed there and so it was the breakfast buffet. Luckily, the restaurant is quite a bit and there was enough staff to keep up with hungry guests.
The highlight of the hotel is indeed a roof spa with 1 600 square meters featuring an indoor pool, huge balcony, and relaxing room. Due to my very short stay, I just found one hour to enjoy the Aurora spa: and to my surprise, I was there nearly alone. (I am not sure whether one elder lady should be counted, as she was sleeping deeply :).
If you like the sauna, you will definitely enjoy the Aurora spa. There is a finish sauna (80°C), herbal sauna (60°C) and steam spa (40°C). Of course, it is possible to arrange and book many various procedures such a massage or facial mask.
By booking a stay in Elbrezidenz you also get free entrance to the legendary Toskana Therme: the main city spa, this is just stone’s throw away from the hotel. Of course, it is much less private that Aurora spa but I really recommend checking it out, too. Toskana Therme features an amazing relaxation pool, with salty water and underwater music.
As said before, the Elbresidenz isn’t the cheapest hotel. It definitely keeps up in the price range of five-star hotels. On booking.com the prices are starting at around 130 EUR including breakfast. You can check the availability and prices here.
